I split one of my hives 2 weeks ago, today is when I did a VERY careful checkup on them.
The worker bees made at least one new queen cell which is exactly what I wanted them to do. Now I just have to wait for another week, then hope the newly emerged queen will find it’s way back from the maiden flight and starts laying eggs soon. FINGERS CROSSED.
The smaller one of the colonies is not doing well at all. The brood ball is tiny, no bigger than a softball size. This really spells trouble for a colony at this time of the year. They will die most likely soon. Not much I can do. They survived all winter, only to be too weak to ramp bee population in the start of spring. So sad.
